Looking beyond the horizon

European research funding isn’t all about Horizon 2020. What are the other options available, and are they worth considering? Oonagh Kinsman and Miriam Ryan weigh up the advantages and disadvantages from a university perspective.

Horizon 2020 is the European Commission’s main source of funding for research and innovation, but grants and tenders are also available through other programmes within the EU institution.

Is it worth applying to these alternatives? Well, yes and no. Their success rates are sometimes higher than the 12.6 per cent average for Horizon 2020, but they often come with complex and restrictive conditions, and their recovery rates don’t tend to be as generous.
