Impact of ESRC Doctoral Training Centres falls short

The Economic and Social Research Council’s Doctoral Training Centres, launched in 2011, were expected to have a major positive impact on the social sciences. But the reality has been more mixed, says Richard Budd of Liverpool Hope University.

The UK research councils, now merged under UK Research and Innovation, are the main source of UK state funding and support PhD degrees through a range of doctoral training centres and partnerships.

These can be specific (covering biomedical imaging, for example) or broad (oil and gas). They involve one or more universities and provide opportunities for doctoral students and academics to work together, often across disciplines. They are awarded by the research councils following successful bid applications.
