GDPR questions answered (2/3): Consent and transparency

In the second of three articles answering researchers’ questions on the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation, Sarah Dickson and Rachel Smith of the MRC’s Regulatory Support Centre discuss consent and the need for transparency.

The data protection bill passing through the UK parliament will supersede the existing Data Protection Act 1998 on 25 May, and provide the practical detail of how the GDPR will be applied in the UK. The GDPR has raised a number of concerns among researchers. Here we can take the opportunity to challenge some of the GDPR myths that have arisen.

Can we keep research study participants’ contact details, so that if we are funded in future we can contact them? I’ve heard that I need to reconfirm consent every 12 months.
