Horizon scan: Funding in 2019

Researchers may look to 2019 with a certain degree of trepidation. While Phil Ward cannot prevent a no-deal Brexit, he can still offer this handy guide to the main events in funding over the next 12 months.

Many researchers and research managers will be glad to see the back of 2018, a tumultuous year to say the least, but I think 2019 will be a year of even greater anxiety. Due to Brexit and the comprehensive spending review the amount of funding available is uncertain, and little is known about the priorities of the new science and universities minister Chris Skidmore.

Nonetheless, researchers and research managers might be grateful for more certainty in two important areas: official guidance on the Research Excellence Framework (REF) will be published, and UKRI will put more flesh on the bones of its Strategic Prospectus.
