Assessing the spread of the foundation’s funding over the years

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is one of the preeminent names in global philanthropy. Computer software magnate Bill Gates first started using his enormous fortune to give out grants for scientific research, global health and local causes in his home state of Washington in 1994.

Over its lifetime, the foundation has given out nearly $80 billion through more than 32,000 grants, starting from as little as $50 and going up to as much as £1.6bn.
