Institutions could withhold data on non-academic staff

Universities will not need to publish data on non-academic staff unless they choose to do so, a Higher Education Statistics Agency consultation has suggested.

Hesa opened a consultation with universities on 28 March to collect views on what data it should continue to collect from institutions. The Office for Students no longer requires the same information from universities that Hesa has previously collected, and information on non-academic staff has not been listed as a statutory requirement by the regulator, the agency said.

“It is expected that in England the provision of this information, in relation to atypical or non-academic staff, will be a non-statutory requirement from 2019-20,” Hesa said in the consultation document.
