New data show that the number of higher education institutions reporting a financial deficit has seen a significant rise in the last three years.
According to finance data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency released on 21 March, 41 UK institutions posted a pre-tax deficit in 2017-18. This compares with 32 in 2016-17 and 19 in 2015-16.
It is the first time Hesa has published its annual higher education provider finance data in full as open data, with no charge.
