Report identifies weaknesses in higher education data

Poor compatibility between datasets and inconsistent approaches by the different nations of the UK are causing problems for researchers using higher education statistics, an Office for Statistics Regulation report has found.

The OFSR report, published on 9 April, looks at a number of information sources, including the National Student Survey, the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey and Longitudinal Education Outcomes (LEO) data. It assesses data held by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (Hesa), the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (Ucas), and the Student Loans Company (SLC).

One of the shortcomings identified by the OFSR, which is part of the UK Statistics Authority, relates to accessing multiple, complementary datasets.
