UK universities have no senior black academics, Hesa data show

Chris Skidmore criticises sector as figures show decline in black senior staff

The universities and science minister has said it is “unacceptable” that there are now no senior black academic staff recorded in official data on UK higher education institutions.

Data published on 23 January by the Higher Education Statistics Agency list no black academic staff as “managers, directors and senior officials” in 2018-19, compared with five in the previous academic year. The figures—which are rounded to the nearest five by Hesa—also list the ethnicity of 35 senior staff as “not known” in 2018-19, compared with five in the previous year.
