Shirley Pearce—the chair of governors at the London School of Economics and Political Science—has been named as head of the independent review of the Teaching Excellence Framework.

Universities and science minister Sam Gyimah welcomed Pearce’s appointment, saying in a statement that Pearce would be “conducting this review to guarantee the maximum efficiency and precision of the TEF ratings process”.

Pearce has a long history in higher education. She is a clinical psychologist who served as vice-chancellor of Loughborough University between 2006 and 2012. She chaired a review of philanthropy in UK Higher Education while a board member at the Higher Education Funding Council for England between 2009 and 2015.
