HE outcomes better for students who spent longer time in care

Data show participation was slightly higher than for those who spent short time in care

Students who have been in care for more than a year are marginally more likely to take part in higher education than those who have been in care for shorter periods of time, according to data published by the Department for Education.

Longitudinal Education Outcomes (LEO) data published by the DfE on 17 June show that for the cohorts of students who were taking key stage 4 qualifications between 2005-06 and 2008-09, 10 per cent of those who had been in care for a full 12 months or longer were in higher education four years after they had taken their KS4 qualification, compared with 7 per cent of those who had been in care for at least one day.
