Study recommends “dual running” of degree classification and grade point averages.
British universities should adopt a grade point average scheme to provide more accurate information for graduates and employers, says a report based on a pilot study.
The report, released by the Higher Education Academy, recommends that universities implement the system while maintaining traditional degree classifications over a five-year trial period. They would then be able to choose whether, when and how to switch to the new system. Although Australia and some other countries maintain a dual system, British institutions should be able to eventually switch to grade point averages alone if judged appropriate, suggests the Grade Point Average Advisory Group, which produced the report.
