Four in 10 engineering and tech staff from overseas, UUK finds

More than 40 per cent of engineering and technology staff at UK universities now come from outside the UK, according to Universities UK.

UUK’s Higher Education in Facts and Figures 2018 report, published on 18 December, shows that 43 per cent of engineering and technology staff at UK universities were from outside of the UK in 2016-17—the most recent year for which data are available—20 per cent were non-UK European Union nationals, and 23 per cent were from countries outside the bloc.

The figure was almost as high in the biological, mathematical and physical sciences, with 39 per cent of staff from overseas: 24 per cent from the EU, and 15 per cent from outside the EU. Overall, almost one-third—31 per cent—of academic staff in the UK are from overseas.
