Pensions row heats up as both sides cry foul

Staff and employers have clashed again over Universities Superannuation Scheme negotiations, with the University and College Union forced to deny accusations that it “continues to peddle misinformation” about the talks.

The vice-chancellors’ body Universities UK issued a blistering attack on the staff union on 30 August, claiming the UCU had been “completely misrepresenting” the employers’ position. But in a strongly worded response, the union dismissed this claim as “disingenuous”.

The USS Joint Negotiating Committee, made up of representatives from employers and the UCU, met last week to discuss what level of contributions employers and members should pay into the scheme. Contributions are being increased to tackle a deficit in the USS that now stands at £6.6 billion according to one estimate.
