Strike ballots show ‘patchy’ turnout and reduced vote for pension strike compared to 2018

The breakdown of results for the University and College Union’s ballots on pensions and pay reveals significant variations in turnout.
On 31 October, the UCU revealed that 41 universities had voted to strike over increased contributions to the Universities Superannuation Scheme, while 54 had backed strike action over pay and working conditions.

As the results were announced, Jo Grady, general secretary of the UCU said the outcome showed “clear support” for strike action over pensions and pay and urged universities to work to address the root problems. “If they choose to ignore this message from their staff then strike action looks inevitable,” she said.
