UCU begins second strike ballot over pay row

Staff at 143 UK universities are being balloted on strike action for a second time in an ongoing row over pay and conditions.

Roughly 70,000 members of the University and College Union, which represents staff, will be asked to strike over a final offer of a 2 per cent pay rise from the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA), made in May 2018. The ballot opens on 15 January and closes on 22 February.

“Staff have concerns about spiralling workloads, pay inequality and the continued casualisation of the workforce. Yet universities have failed to engage with us in these negotiations, which has undermined the credibility of national bargaining and left us in a situation where we have no alternative but to ballot our members,” said UCU head of policy Matt Waddup.
