Eight out of 10 universities may not be sustainable in the long term unless they fix ongoing financial deficits, according to government-funded higher education experts.
The Financial Sustainability Strategy Group, which leads evidence-based policy research on the sustainability of higher education, says the sector has not recovered the full costs of its activities for many years.
“A significant majority of universities—79 per cent—recovered less than 100 per cent of their full economic cost in 2014-15, and these institutions may not be sustainable in the long term unless action is taken to address the gaps,” the FSSG warns in a report published on 27 February.
