University title ‘should be contingent on adult learning offer’

   

100 years after original report, adult education commission also calls for lifelong learning minister

Higher education institutions should not be allowed to call themselves a university unless they can provide adult education that is appropriate to the needs of their local communities, a report into lifelong learning has said.

The Centenary Commission on Adult Education was established last year by a group of educators who wanted to ensure the anniversary of the 1919 Ministry of Reconstruction Adult Education Committee’s Final Report was not overlooked.
