Total number of universities facing industrial action rises to 74

Staff at 14 universities have voted to join strike action over pensions, pay and conditions this spring, bringing the total number of institutions that could be affected to 74.

The University and College Union re-balloted members at 36 universities where there was not enough support for strikes in a first round of balloting last year. UK law states that unions must reach a 50 per cent turnout threshold among members for strikes to go ahead, which the UCU calls “punitive”.
