Exeter cites limits to powers as student details explicit messages

The university says it is ‘truly sorry’ it did not find those behind the content

University of Exeter provost Janice Kay has condemned “horrific and sickening” messages sent to a student, but stressed the university has limited powers to tackle anonymous accounts online.

Kay’s comments came after a student published an article detailing a slew of racist and sexually violent messages she received from anonymous sources online, some of which were claimed to be from fellow students. The University of Exeter confirmed to Research Professional News that Kay’s comments referred to the article.
