Charter to reform after criticism from universities

The application process for Athena SWAN awards, which recognise universities’ work on gender equality, is to be streamlined after a review revealed concerns about the administrative burden on staff, particularly women. 

According to the report of the Athena SWAN Charter Review Independent Steering Group, published 19 March, there are concerns about “the data burden, clarity of the assessment criteria, the consistency with which [assessment] panels operate and the extent to which the process meets the needs of teaching-focused institutions”.
