Private and charitable chains have ‘a hunger’ to invest in UK institutions, says former minister
Former universities and science minister David Willetts has pitched the idea of foreign investors taking over UK universities that are struggling to balance their books.
Speaking at the University of Buckingham’s Festival of Higher Education on 7 July, Willetts, who was minister between 2010 and 2014, said there was “a hunger” among charitable university chains and for-profit institutions to invest in British higher education—which he suggested could provide a lifeline for universities in financial hardship.
