The number of university applicants holding non-traditional qualifications has doubled since 2011.
The number of UK 18-year-old undergraduate applicants holding at least one BTEC qualification in 2015 has risen by 18 per cent on the previous year, according to analysis by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service.
Over the past four years, the number holding BTECs has doubled to reach 42,130, representing 15 per cent of total applicants. Of that number, three-quarters held only BTECs, an increase of 37 per cent on 2011, of which nearly half took place in 2015.
