‘Worrying decline’ in applications from maths students

   

Mathematical sciences has suffered a drop in applications from prospective students

There has been a “worrying decline” in the number of students taking mathematical sciences, the latest admissions figures show.

Data from admissions body Ucas reveal that the number of students accepted to undergraduate courses starting in the 2020-21 academic year had reached 541,240 overall, a 1.5 per cent increase on 2018, with the proportion of 18-year-old applicants accepted to university rising to 97.8 per cent, a slight increase of 0.2 percentage points compared to last year.
