Students at University Technical Colleges are not as likely to go on to higher education as their peers at mainstream institutions, the Education Policy Institute has revealed.
Despite each UTC having a university sponsor, students who take Level 3 qualifications such as A-levels at the colleges are 15 percentage points less likely to choose higher education than students at sixth form colleges, according to a report published by the institute on 11 October.
The institute said UTCs were underperforming and the government “should not fund further UTC expansion until a review is undertaken”. Just 41 per cent of UTC students go to university, however, students at UTCs were more likely to go into higher education than those at further education colleges, which had the lowest progression rate at 32 per cent.
