‘Conditional unconditional’ offer shares revealed

Contentious “conditional unconditional” offers made up more than 10 per cent of all offers at more than 20 universities in 2018, it was revealed as education secretary Damian Hinds praised some universities for ending the practice.

According to data from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (Ucas), the University of Roehampton topped the table with 65.8 per cent of all offers made classed as conditional unconditional offers in 2018. A conditional unconditional offer guarantees a place for a student if they put that university as their first choice, which many have argued has a negative impact on students’ A-level grades.

A spokesman for the University of Roehampton said it no longer offers conditional unconditional offers. “We regularly review our admissions policy and consult our students annually on their experience of applying to us. Last year, 95 per cent of our applicants were happy with their experience of applying to the university.”
