University free speech guidelines published

Advice for universities on how to protect free speech, first promised by former universities minister Sam Gyimah, has been published by the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

The 54-page guide spells out English and Welsh law on free speech in universities, provides case studies and gives specific definitions of terms associated with freedom of expression, such as ‘no-platforming’.

Leaders from higher education agreed to create guidance on free speech during a summit in May 2018, held by the Department for Education and universities minister at the time Sam Gyimah.
