York awarded £4.8m to develop language teaching

The University of York is to become England’s first modern foreign languages centre for excellence.

The centre will be known as the Centre for Excellence for Languages Pedagogy and will work with schools to help more young people learn foreign languages, the Department for Education announced on 10 January. The department said it would be backing the project with £4.8m over the next four years.

The university will coordinate the work of nine modern foreign language “hubs”, comprising leading schools that are sharing best practice to boost the teaching of Spanish, French and German.
