Jo Johnson has pledged that the Teaching Excellence Framework is “vital” to higher education and will continue even though the TEF's link to fee rises is now off the table.
On 1 October, May announced that the government would freeze tuition fees at £9,250, throwing the future of the TEF into doubt, as participating universities expected to be allowed to raise fees on an annual basis.
However, on 3 October at a fringe event, universities and science minister Jo Johnson said that the announcement would not jeopardise the future of the assessment, which is a “powerful driver in the sector to focus on teaching”.
