Academics and students clash over free tuition in Scotland

A row has broken out between students and academics over free university tuition in Scotland.

Several senior academics told The Herald newspaper that there should be a national debate on free tuition, with one anonymous university executive reportedly calling the Scottish National Party’s free tuition policy a “sacred cow” that cannot be openly challenged.

Speaking to the paper, Peter Mathieson, vice-chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, stressed that high-quality education must be paid for, whether by tuition fees or other investment.
