Post-1992 universities will be worst hit by Brexit, says Labour

The shadow higher education minister has warned that newer universities will be disproportionately affected by the loss of European Union funding after Brexit.

Speaking at a fringe event at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, Gordon Marsden said “Post-1992s will be hit most by the loss of European Structural Funding” when the UK leaves the EU.

Marsden also criticised the government’s lack of clarity over what would replace the funding. “We have the Orwellian sounding National Progress Fund, which was floated at a Conservative Party conference but has never seen the light of day since,” he told the meeting, which was organised by the National Education Opportunities Network.
