European Union nationals who have lived in the UK for five years prior to Brexit will be allowed to remain, the prime minister has pledged.

A new "UK settled status" would grant EU migrants who had lived in the UK for five years rights to stay and access health, education and other benefits, Theresa May has announced. The move is expected to affect about three million EU citizens who are living in the UK, reports the BBC. The Financial Times reports that the proposal made by Mrs May at a summit in Brussels on 22 June includes scrapping the 85-page residence application.
