‘Redistribute research funding to support regions’

University research would better underpin the economy if it were rebalanced, according to Jonathan Adams of Digital Science.

The results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework have led to £6 billion of public funding being concentrated in London and the south east of England. But funding research solely on the basis of excellence neglects the crucial role that science plays in boosting local economies, argues Dr Adams.
