Strike: a balance

We hear from both sides of the dispute that is dividing universities

On day two of strike action in 60 universities, the chief executive of Universities UK, Alistair Jarvis, and the general secretary of the University and College Union, Jo Grady, write exclusively for Research Professional News. This morning, we bring you forthright opinions from either side of the industrial action over the Universities Superannuation Scheme, and later today we will also bring you word from the Universities and Colleges Employers Association, which represents universities in pay negotiations.

Grady tells us that “on picket lines up and down the country, the mood is buoyant but the anger is palpable. Staff are understandably furious that they have been pushed to take strike action for the second time in two years in a bid to keep their pensions affordable.”
