SDP reboot

This week’s choreographed launch of the Independent Group provided a welcome, if all too brief, break from two years of drip-drip, Brexit-fuelled gloom.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, there were jokes, joy, handshakes and celebration among the 11 (eight Labour and three Conservative) MPs who crossed the floor of the House of Commons. In contrast, Theresa May’s government took a (small) step towards possible collapse and Labour’s leadership yet again found itself apologising for what seems to be uncontrollable anti-Semitism among a section of the party’s members.

Comparisons are being made between the Independent Group and the launch of the Campaign for Social Democracy more than four decades ago, followed soon after by the creation of the Social Democratic Party in the spring of 1981.
