University finances are in the news again as students give their thoughts on how institutional instability should be handled.

Entire years can never be defined by a single issue—particularly in the nuanced, unstable world of higher education. Nevertheless, it seems there is always a topic that is capable of relentlessly fighting its way to the top of the agenda.

In 2017, it was vice-chancellors’ pay. In 2018, free speech on campus. And if the first quarter of this year is anything to go by, 2019 will be remembered as the year of financial concern.
