Innovation at the crossroads

Nesta considers the social impact of innovation policy.

What is innovation policy for? Who benefits? Does it need to be more democratic? These are among the questions aired this week by the innovation think tank Nesta, which has launched two reports intended to shake up conventional thinking.

Nesta has been around for more than two decades, so why the need to go back to basics? The answer is in part a lack of consensus on whether yesterday’s received wisdom is today’s thought experiment. That’s why Nesta’s chief executive Geoff Mulgan and research director Kirsten Bound have been opening their doors to some quite radical thinking.
