Conference call

The annual meeting of the National Union of Students opens today in Glasgow.

It is one of the highlights of the academic calendar when the National Union of Students meets to elect its leader for the coming year. Shakira Martin has served as president since 2017 and will be passing on the baton, but there is no obvious successor.

Martin has been a popular advocate for students, balancing her passion for social mobility as a non-traditional student of further education with her worldly wisdom as a 31-year old mother of two. However, her second year in office has found her occupied with the difficult task of trying to turn around the financial fortunes of the union.
