A report published today highlights academic attitudes to the Research Excellence Framework.

Back in April 2018, Research England announced plans for a real-time evaluation of the 2021 Research Excellence Framework to assess the effects of the changes introduced after the Stern review. The results of a pilot study, involving four universities and a sample of 600 academics, are released today.

Fiona McIntyre reports on the publication of attitudes to the REF at Cardiff University and the Universities of Sheffield, Sussex and Lincoln, across eight subpanels from allied health to media studies. Elsewhere on the HE website this morning, Steven Hill, director of research at Research England, writes about the significance of the pilot and says it has successfully demonstrated the feasibility of conducting a mixed-methods review.
