Amid the January snow in Russia, Playbook has been meeting academics at the National Research University Higher School of Economics. Back home, the difficult choices confronting universities in post-Brexit Britain are coming thick and fast.

This morning, the Wellcome Trust and the Brussels-based think tank Bruegel publish the results of a simulation of negotiations between the UK and the European Union over science and research. Teams of academics and policy experts have war-gamed the discussions and predict that the UK may miss out on the start of Horizon Europe in January 2021.
