Some days it can be tricky to select a topic for Playbook analysis. Today is not one of those days, despite a late bid for the limelight from Research England, which has just revealed that UK institutions intend to submit a whopping 74,584 staff (full-time equivalent, that is) to the Research Excellence Framework 2021—a 43 per cent increase on 2014.
