How to counteract a hostile environment for visiting international students
Under the European Union’s Erasmus+ exchange programme, tens of thousands of students from across Europe came to the UK to study. In 2018, for example, some 29,797 students came to our shores under the scheme, spending time on university and college campuses across the UK.
In January 2020, prime minister Boris Johnson said that a Scottish National Party MP who expressed fears that the UK was set to withdraw from Erasmus+ was “talking through the back of his neck”, adding that there was “no threat to the Erasmus scheme—we will continue to participate”. Naturally, then, the UK subsequently ceased to participate.
