What do the election results tell us about the politics of higher education?

If universities in England are to welcome back all students on 17 May, the government is cutting it fine to give them one week’s notice as promised. While we wait for that particular memo from the Department for Education today, there is plenty for us to ponder about last week’s election results.

As he plans the latest in a long line of post-defeat policy reviews, perhaps Keir Starmer should consider—like Tony Blair before him—a name change for his party. Only this time, rather than “New Labour”, he should go the whole hog and change the name to “(Another Disappointing Night for) the Labour Party”.
