Another fine mess

Universities in England are once again threatened with penalties via the press

It would seem that prime minister Boris Johnson is not the only one who can expect to receive a fine for wrongdoing in the coming weeks. Further and higher education minister Michelle Donelan is threatening to impose fines on universities in England for teaching, or more accurately for online teaching.

It’s a funny old world. One day you are sitting in front of your wheezing departmental-issue laptop trying to work out how to engage 50 students who have just had their education turned upside down by a global pandemic. You are being praised by the minister for your ‘world-class’ efforts, and the students—who think they might be due some compensation—are being told they’ve never had it so good.
