Association with Horizon Europe needs a “miracle”
Craig Nicholson, our man in Brussels, brought us the news on Tuesday that Maria Leptin, president of the European Research Council (ERC), has suggested that a “miracle” will be needed to overcome the obstacles blocking the UK’s association with the cross-border Horizon Europe research scheme. British researchers are now looking for a Hail Mary.
For those not familiar with US sports parlance, a Hail Mary is a move in American football, usually very late in the game, when the ball will be pumped high and long in the vain hope that it will find a receiving player for a touchdown. It’s a bit like a drop-goal attempt from the halfway line in the 80th minute for followers of the other oval-shaped code.
