Claire Langhamer tells Playbook why studying history is more important than ever

As Cruella de Braverman exits the Conservative leadership race to spend more time with other people’s pronouns, we take a historical turn this morning—noting on the way that yesterday’s letter to vice-chancellors from Research England, allocating formula funding for the next few years, made specific reference to “the significant contribution to culture and quality of life from the arts and humanities”.

It has been hard to escape a sense of living through history in recent months—and days. Yet there is, says Claire Langhamer, director of the Institute of Historical Research, “trickiness about history at the moment”.
