What to look forward to if you are looking forward to the UUK conference

Last night, Britain’s vice-chancellors gathered for their evening meal after the first day of Universities UK’s annual conference. The UUK table talk was of only one thing: the Liz Truss government and what it might mean for higher education and research.

Twelve months ago, as the university bosses met for the first time in person after Covid—to be addressed via Zoom by Gavin Williamson, education secretary at the time—Playbook remembers one sage commenting that the UK was becoming more like Italy, with chaotic short-lived governments occupying the media while public institutions muddled through regardless, keeping the country on track.
