It is said that compromise is the art of dividing a cake in such a way that everyone believes they have the biggest piece. If ever there was a week where it felt like this was the definition of university management, this is it.

Staff at many universities across the UK are on strike today, sacrificing their income in a bid to improve pay and conditions across the board. It was supposed to be a week of industrial action at 140 higher education institutions—but it hasn’t quite turned out that way. Universities the length and breadth of the UK now find themselves negotiating locally to resolve a pay and conditions dispute that has been the subject of national industrial action for months.
