Could the government try—again—to bring migration down to the tens of thousands?
Any doubts that talking tough on migration would be a central part of the upcoming general election campaign were dispelled yesterday.
First, the Sunday Telegraph and the Sunday Times reported on calls from former immigration minister Robert Jenrick and former levelling-up minister Neil O’Brien to bring migration down to below 100,000. The two Conservative MPs are shortly to bring out a report on this with the Centre for Policy Studies, a centre-right think tank.
