Playbook speaks to the outgoing director of the Institute of Development Studies
The disconnect between universities and the Home Office was exposed again yesterday as the government adopted a celebratory tone to announce an 80 per cent year-on-year fall in student dependant applications in the first quarter of 2024.
From January this year, ministers removed the right for international students to bring dependants, unless they are on postgraduate research programmes. We will never know which potential students have opted against a UK education on the basis of those reforms, nor what contributions to the UK they might have made had they been allowed to bring a family member.
